1977

1970 / 1971 Season

Due to work commitments key committee and management were unavailable and as a result no one was prepared to take on the job of club secretary. As a last resort I volunteered to stop the club from folding.

It was really the last thing I'd wanted to do because my first child, Neil, had just been born in March of 1970, I changed my job in that summer and moved house in the Autumn. Life was fairly hectic to say the least. This is probably why I didn't have time to keep any record of the seasons results. Consequently it was a poor start all round for our first season in the Houghton & District League. The one thing I did learn from this season was the work that a club secretary had to do.

I know I didn't have a particularly good season as a player but at least it kept the club going. I was still scoring goals but at 25, which should have been a peak season, it seemed like a wasted one.

Below is a copy from the first page of my note book. Other pages related to the secretary's responsibilities plus players name and addresses.

With Jimmy Clark and Norman T Taylor unavailable this season the committee was basically down to 4 members and 2 of these were players namely Billy Anderson and myself and we carried out the secretary’s duties. Ernie Carlin, our Trainer, and Terry Brace, our Treasurer, both helped manage the team in Jimmy’s absence. To try and do our best to ensure that Jimmy would continue his links with the club as manager he was made Chairman. To cover for Jimmy, Ernie also acted as Chairman to add to his other 2 roles.

With things a bit desperate Terry Brace got his younger brother Kevin to help and he stayed on at the club until 1984 and became the clubs Treasurer.

This was the last season the team would be known as Ryhope YC.
